Before registering your student for the program, please note that program levels are not based on age or grade, but rather on your student's specific chess knowledge of the game and ability/skills in playing.  Please refer to these guidelines when selecting a lesson level for your student.  Keep in mind that the game of chess is multi-faceted and takes time to learn.  In many cases, students may need to repeat a given level before progressing to the next level.

  • Beginner 2 Completed the Beginner 1 class or has some beginning knowledge of the game
  • Novice:  Knows the names/values of the chess pieces, how they move, and has some understanding of basic opening principles.
  • Continuing:  Has a firm grasp of the basic opening principles, and can apply middle game tactics (such as pins and forks) in pursuit of checkmate.

SESSION 3

FRIDAYS 1:30-2:30 pm

Chess-Ed will continue to provide this unique, exciting and dynamic chess instruction which lifts each student to a new level of expertise. Each week students will enjoy an engaging lesson with supervised time to play classmates. Students will grow their knowledge of the game - from the basics through opening theory, middle game tactics and end game combinations. Students’ vocabulary and math skills will continue to advance.

Studies confirm that the student who plays chess does better academically. Playing chess increases IQ performance, improves memory, uses analytical and critical thinking skills, teaches problem solving, responsibility, sportsmanship, social skills and more. The chess program is open to all students in all grades (***If your student is in Kindergarten and not showing interest, it is recommended to wait until they are ready.) and of all playing levels.
